Pedernales

Down in the riverbed, near the falls, I saw a couple sit on the flint

river rocks and watch the water flow past them, talking casually,

about what I could not tell.

The river turned a coffee color at my feet, mud and foam all

swirled into a mixture at once inviting and dangerous,

and I tensed my muscles.

I wondered if the Lipan and Mescalero peoples felt the same

energy when they gathered here, if the river still felt as wild

as it did when they lived nearby.

Life feels so short to me, it feels as if it is rushing by and

I can’t hold on to it, and the Pedernales does not care,

it just rolls on and on to the ocean.
