What You Should Know About Holocaust Denial

Growing up, I can’t remember a time when I didn’t know what the Holocaust was. In school, we touched on it briefly in history class. In fact, in eighth grade, I attended a youth symposium about the Holocaust at West Chester University in Pennsylvania. At the symposium, I was given the chance to meet and speak with a survivor along with a small group of people. As a kid, I read books such as Number the Stars by Lois Lowry. Therefore, it never occurred to me that people would deny that the occurrence of an event such as the Shoah ever happened.

In college, I entered as a History and Writing double-major. One day, I was browsing in Barnes and Noble in the history section, and a book called Denial: Holocaust History on Trial caught my eye. I almost couldn’t believe the title. Who in their right mind would deny that the Holocaust happened? I left the store that day with the book in hand and finished it in record time. So you may be telling yourself, “Yeah, Holocaust denial is messed up, but I don’t really need to know anything about it because I know it happened!”
