An Open Letter to Butt Flickers

What gives you the right to dismantle our ecosystems and biomes?

You have the option at your fingertips…but does that mean you should take advantage of it? I’m talking to you, tar inhaling, second hand producing cigarette smokers. With your stained teeth, carcinogenic handshakes and devastating rayon butt trails. Who or what entitles you to pitch your shit where ever you please?

If your answer is that, “well, everyone else throws their cigarettes on the ground, why would mine matter?”

Let me refresh your conscious with something you most likely already understood about yourself but not others around you. You share this planet, and your laziness effects us. Nevermind the fossil fuels you burn, meat you consume, and garbage you add to the inevitable pile, but in addition, carcinogenic aerosols to the air and rubbish to the ground we eat from, why would you want to make an already weak world, worse?

Did you know that plants are easily susceptible to nicotine? So that tea you’re drinking, prescription you’re taking and food you’re eating may attribute to your nicotine intake? Did you know that the butts flicked to the side of the road, end up in stormwater drains that drain into vernal pools and lakes and contaminate water — leading to aquatic population declination? Did you know that in multiple studies of random groups of wildlife death, non-biodegradeable butss were found in the stomachs of the animals?

I’ve yet to hear a response from any individual that rectifies the destruction cigarette smoking causes. There are no excuses, and nothing to gain from it.
