Como 2.25.2020

When I was thinking about a community I could document through photography, my mind immediately drifted toward the Como area. I always enjoy walking around there, and I always find a lot of natural beauty in Como, no matter the season. So, I decided that I wanted to document the nature and objects found around Como that most define the area. I decided not to focus on the people of Como, although that would also be a fascinating undertaking. Mainly, I focused on the static man-made objects and nature found in Como because they particularly stood out to me on February 25th, 2020.

After deciding on Como, I started to think about what I really wanted to gain from photographing the area. Como is a place I value highly in the greater landscape of the Twin Cities, and I wanted to figure out why Como holds that value in my mind. In our lives, there are many places we view as important for a number of reasons. What I have found, throughout my life, is that digging to the bottom of that importance and meaning can enhance the connection that I have with a place. For that reason, I set out for Como, aiming to understand the root of its beauty.

Without further adieu, I present to you the photos of Como, from 2.25.2020.

From photographing and composing this set of photos of Como, I learned that Como is an area defined by its nature as much as what humans have contributed. The snow-covered golfcourse, as seen in “Watchin’ Winter Turn to Spring”, is as defining as the beehive complex made for a science experiment, as seen in “Bees in the Sun”. This dynamic is what makes Como such a special place for so many, including myself.

Como has so much to offer in its static natural beauty. The Como Conservatory includes a park nearby with a currently frozen and snowy water stream, and the adjacent fields offer an incredible amount of life in the depths of the coldest winters. Furthermore, Lake Como’s iced surface surrounded by its charismatic plant life set the stage for a calming area of nature; walking around the lake settles the mind to a state of zen.

Along with nature, humans have also contributed significantly to the sights that define Como. From statues to science experiments, the personalities and values of the people of Como are shown through what humans have constructed and implemented in the area. In particular, the sciences and the ability to stop and enjoy the surroundings stood out to me as ideas that humans have emphasized in their gradual construction of Como.

The story of Como cannot be told without its nature and its humanity. This is the crucial idea of what I gained and what I hope to communicate from this set of photos; Como is a beautiful cross-section of nature and humanity, two elements that complement each other in perfect balance in this one particular pocket of the Twin Cities.
