How To Choose The Best Supplements

Supplements are controversial. Many people question the necessity of supplementation. They believe we can get all the nutrients from our food. Sadly, they are often mistaken.

While we should have the ability to obtain all nutrients from food, the modern lifestyle does not make this possible at all.

Studies show that “in large portions of the population, micronutrient minimum daily allowances’ are currently not being achieved via standard food solutions for many essential vitamins and minerals.”

It can take anywhere from several days to several weeks to get food from the farm to your local grocery store. There are additional steps, such as the extra time it takes to get from the farm to your local grocer (1–3 days) and the additional time it spends in your refrigerator (upto seven days). The time it takes from farm to plate can lead to significant loss of key micronutrients.

This list covers pretty much everyone, as you can see. Supplements are important. However, it is crucial to choose the right supplement for you. I believe most people can benefit greatly from high-quality multivitamin/mineral supplements and high-quality fish oils.

You may now be curious how to tell the difference between good and poor quality supplements. It’s best to consult your doctor and do your research, but these are the top six things you should look for.

1. You should ensure that your company has a Natural Products Number (NPN) in Canada. This eight-digit number signifies that the product has been evaluated by Health Canada and found to be safe, effective, and high quality.

2. Do your research to ensure that the company is trustworthy and operates with integrity. You can do this by searching the internet to find out if there has been any recalls, complaints, or ensuring that claims are supported by research. Also, ensure that the company adheres to Good Manufacturing Practices. You should also check to make sure they have a good customer service policy (such as a money-back or satisfaction guarantee).

3. Good labeling practices are important. This means that active and inactive ingredients are listed clearly. Do they share all ingredients? Or do they keep them secretive about ‘proprietary blends’? Make sure that any contraindications or allergens are clearly listed on the label.

4. Look out for logos indicating third-party testing on products. A company submits their product to third-party testing to have it tested for quality and purity. Consumer Labs, Informed Choice and the Natural Products Association are some of the most respected organizations.

6. Make sure the correct dosage is used to achieve the effect you desire. This is particularly important if you use supplements for therapeutic purposes and not to maintain your health. A one-a-day multi from the pharmacy will not provide the nutrients that you need.

I recommend eating foods with high levels of natural vitamins and minerals if you don’t know what nutrient(s), or how much you need. Why? This is because your body prefers to extract the nutrients it needs from whole foods. This also reduces the possibility of taking too much.
