A submission for the prompt: Raven (with admiration for Poe)

Once I thought myself alone, had found a sec to check my phone —
Sitting on my bathroom floor, swiping through a sub of kittens sweet
While I silently kept laughing, suddenly there came a tapping
As of someone wildly knocking, knocking at my stockinged feet.
“’Tis the wind,” I muttered, “knocking at my stockinged feet —”
(I whispered this) “and not defeat.”

I refused then to surrender — took a breath to find my center —
pretended I could not hear the call for yet another thing to eat.
Silently therefore I texted and some help I then requested
and a break I had suggested — suggested time for me to read
For the rare and silent moments, I could get to sit and read
Dreamt of here, not guaranteed.

And the ringing in reply voiced the ruse of my weak lie
Brought about a further moaning and a vow to not retreat
I checked the text I had received, now expecting a swift reprieve
“For a walk, I have now gone, with a friend I meant to meet”
This answer on my phone seemed incomplete
“He must return!” I hit delete.

“Mommy, can I watch TV? Got the remote right here, you see?”
Under the door next to my feet, and I just forget the AAP,
the remote now on display could help me quickly get my way
and get an hour on my own, and finally get to read
The dream, to sit in my chair, a cup of tea, and get to read
to the end of a book — complete!

“Okay my dear, go put it on,” as I stifle a small yawn
Open the door and get my book, sit upon my favorite seat
this page I’ve spent two hours on, I can rest my eyes upon
but suddenly my shoulder’s shaking, and my eyes are full of tweed
it’s my husband, now returned, three hours I’ve spent asleep
asleep in this time to read!
