A Little Out of My League

Where can I get a hat like that?

The house was called the Pink Palace. Located just on the fringe of the Upper East Side and Spanish Harlem, it was not a conveniently located client. To get there was a long bike ride, an expensive cab ride, a subway ride with a lot of walking from the station, or an endless bus ride.

Whatever, it didn’t stop them from calling almost every day to say:

As their sales rep for Action Magazine, I couldn’t say no — even though they were just a one-quarter page ad. The boss was diligent in his pursuit to have new and fresh faces for his magazine. I had no choice in the matter. Up I went to take care of business.

The Palace was owned by a friendly, pleasantly plump Hispanic lesbian. And the girls were all mad ghetto. As one of the princesses requested “please make sure my face isn’t showing. They get the paper on Rikers Island” (where her boo was obviously spending some time) “and I don’t want my man to see me.”

American working girls of color were notorious for having boyfriends who were either in jail, on their way to jail, or had just come out of jail. And most the Palace girls’ boyfriends answered to that description. You get the idea.

So one day, I was summoned to take pictures of who the boss said was a girl I was going to love. She apparently had a giant chest. Not that I was going to do a session with her. But the madam figured just looking would be a major enticement for her mongrel ad guy.

Well, sure enough, my photo subject was (as you see above) quite large in the chestal area — and personable as well. Back then, I shot with an analog Minolta (this was just before the marketing of digital photography). and I generally took a roll of 24 to make sure I’d get two or three useable shots.

Confident I had what I needed — and with one photo left in the roll — I asked my new friend:
