A great way to Fly if you are lucky

The story of travel businesses run by shady travel agents and incompetent call centers.

The life of an immigrant is no fun, even though it appears to be fulfilling, prosperous, and filled with happiness for many natives of the country. The thought of someone close to you still living far away from your immigrant country will haunt your mind, and if those are your aging parents, that feeling becomes painful at times.

My Mommy was happy in the year 2022 because the effects of the pandemic were slowly wading away, and people started international traveling back again. She can hug her grandkids again after we last traveled to my home country in 2019. But the airline tickets were expensive when I checked to book tickets in the summer of 2022. I told my wife. “Let’s do one thing. Let’s book air tickets for summer 2023 so we will get affordable prices”. She agreed, and I found some excellent prices on a travel website called Expedia to travel via Singapore. I have never traveled to India from North America via that travel route. That was new to me. But the Singapore Airport was a real teaser. I wanted to see one of the best international airports. Also, Singapore Airlines had a good rating for hospitality.

I booked the tickets in Economy class for a decent airfare using a travel credit card. These long international travels are costly when we get tickets for all family members, and we have to budget well ahead for a year. It is like paying property taxes in Texas. But using my travel credit card, I could pay off the amount monthly without much interest. Additionally, I can accumulate travel reward points. That will help me use the card again for the travel expenses. By the time I had to travel in 2023, I would have paid off the credit card debt. So all set and planned well. I did all this in August 2022 for a trip in May 2023.

One day in December 2022, my Mommy called in our regular weekly WhatsApp video call, and she appeared a little worried. I asked her what happened, and she said Pappa (My Dad) tripped on our rubber plantation while working on something. He is fine, except he has a wound on his hand. It takes time for the injury to heal. He is in his late seventies and diabetic. I just wished I could fly home and be with my dad then…
