How Treemaps are better than Pie Chart

The pie chart is the most common visualization technique used for visualizing part of whole relationships. In other words, these types of charts are useful for showing proportions.
However, treemap is the visualization technique that can perform the task more efficiently. This article explores how treemaps are better than pie charts.

Pie chart, as the name suggests, is visualization consisting of a circle divided into sectors. Each sector represents a portion of the data. The larger the sector, the bigger the measure. The sectors can be color-coded to include another measures. Donut chart is basically a hollow pie chart, which is visually more easier to process.

It can be easily inferred from the above pie chart that based on market share, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon etc. are the largest companies.

Unlike pie chart, the whole is represented by rectangle in a treemap. Each measure within the chart is also represented by a rectangle.
Like the sectors in pie charts, the rectangles vary in size according to the size of the measure they represent. All the part measures are stacked withing the rectangle which represents the whole like a rectangular brick wall with bricks of varying size.

From the above treemap, the relative market cap of each company can be easily inferred. The above figure also provides the details of the stocks performance by means of color.
