On Designers as Persistent Teachers

The practice of teaching design has many underlying benefits. You can design the learning of design, which may sound a bit meta, but is a powerful way of further learning how one takes in knowledge and makes use of it.

The problem solving mindset designers cultivate is an incredibly powerful attribute. It is one so important in decision-making that I find it difficult to to share with others. In my estimation, all designers should be informing others of the powers inherent within a designer mind: the ability to think in systems while solve complex problems.

As a designer of the 21st century, (whether intentional or not) we ought to be poised to lead a career with deep impact. No longer can designs be placed into the world without a recognition of its full range of implications. The same mentality should be considered when working with team members. It’s to the extent that having a designer mind puts teaming in an unequal position. And so, it is within our control to foster an unending mentorship both for new designers entering the field as well as educating our team members around us about how to problem solve through systems design and design thinking.

Look across your current direct and extended teams for opportunities to level up their knowledge-base of design thinking. Run a small workshop that makes use of problem solving techniques. Reflect on how you came together to draw out ideations and how you made decisions as a team. Run this on a regular basis (keeping in mind what it would look like if everyone in your organization leveraged this way of thinking. What a marvelous world it would be!
