How to write a convincing protagonist.

The days of the superman hero are basically over. Readers are craving morally grey protagonists more and more, but how do you create someone that is lovable and flawed?

I like to think that I’m a kind person. I frequently do my best when it comes to social interactions. I try to be inclusive and loving and kind. My main philosophy when it comes to interacting with others is that I try to treat others the way that I would want to be treated.

I am human, though. I know that I’ve done some garbage things to people.

It’s not that I intentionally hurt people, but sometimes if I’m angry I do lash out. What can I say, nobody is perfect. As much as I can be a good person in someone’s life, I can be a villain in someone else’s too.

I can be the hero of my own story while creating enemies along the way.

This is important to remember when writing a hero. ‘Art imitates life’ or something like that. Your hero should make mistakes. They should throw out a careless line that hurt somebody’s feelings. Your hero should knock someone down.

There are a few ways that you can get your hero to mess up. One is intentionally and the other isn’t. You can accidentally hurt somebody or you can do damage on purpose. You need to decide which kind of bad move you want your character to make.

You want to make sure that your hero doesn’t do something that is out of character for them. If you have a sweet, reliable character, you probably shouldn’t let them go on a killing spree, but they could maybe abandon a friend in a time of crisis.
