DO YOU KNOW WHAT ARE THE GENRES OF POETRY?

The term genre refers to a distinct manner of expression (in literature, music, film, etc.) that has some distinguishing characteristics that allow a specific sort of art to be identified. The following are the primary types of poetry

i. Lyric Poetry

ii. Dramatic Poetry

iii. Narrative Poetry

LYRIC POETRY

A lyric poem is a non-narrative poem that usually has thirty to forty lines and focuses on the imaginations, sentiments, emotions, and passions of a single speaker. The tone is subjective, and at times biographical. Lyric poetry was accompanied by a lyre in ancient times (a musical instrument). According to historians, the origins of lyric poetry can be traced back to the Egyptian tradition of elegies, odes, hymns, and pastoral poetry (e.g. the pyramid texts). Similar manuscripts have also been found in Greek and Hebrew poetic traditions. Some of the well-known Greek writers who composed excellent lyric poetry were Hesiod, Homer, Sappho, Pindar, Sophocles, and Euripides.

During the Renaissance and Romanticism, the art of lyric poetry blossomed gloriously.

TYPES OF LYRIC POETRY:

Example:

Ode to Twilight

O darkish light of faint twilight

I feel delight to have thy sight.

To view thy hue to touch thy height.

To touch thy height, where birds take flight.

When there is night, you are out of sight!

O mariner of the seas of lore,

I cant endure thy fall in azure.

O glorious glimpse of the heaven’s door,

My heart is sore and you are a cure.

O historian of he days of yore,

I look for you from a tranquil shore!

DRAMATIC POETRY

Dramatic poetry is a type of poetry that is presented in a dramatic manner; it can be spoken, sung, or performed as a theatrical performance on stage. A dramatic poem can be written in any style. A dramatic poem’s characters can be fictional, historical, or composite (i.e. combination of real and irreal). The role of poetic lexis, dialogues, rhythmic relationships, situations, costume, and setting in the representation of a poetic play must be considered; it may express both sad and humorous content. Dramatic poetry was regarded as a valuable form of art and literature in ancient Greece.

The genre of dramatic poetry blossomed during the Renaissance, and theatres attracted the audience’s creative taste by presenting the most captivating performances. Ben Johnson, William Shakespeare, and Christopher Marlowe are just a few of the prominent poets who have contributed the masterpieces of dramatic poetry.

Example:

Taken from : “ The Irreal Morgue” (a translated version)

“…When human hopes aerate,

The darkling view of fate,

The minds then sensate,

The souls then pulsate

With moments we create

Till Truth will obliterate

The rigmarole innate…”

NARRATIVE POETRY

Narrative poetry is a type of poetry that tells a story that is connected with the primary plot; it does not have to follow any certain metrical patterns. The length of a narrative poem varies depending on the type of poem; the themes of narrative poems allow for a lot of variance. The origins of narrative poetry can be traced back to the oral practise of versification. Oral folklore traditions in Hebrew, Greek, and Sanskrit are some of the examples of narrative poetry found in ancient manuscripts. In modern times, this type of poetry is primarily represented by one of the three types listed below:

Mentioned below is an idyll, taken from Alfred Tennyson’s “Idylls of the King.

Rain, rain, and sun! a rainbow in the sky!
A young man will be wiser by and by;
An old man’s wit may wander ere he die.
Rain, rain, and sun! a rainbow on the lea!
And truth is this to me, and that to thee…

(Alfred Tennyson)
