Music that makes people think about their social standing creates anxiety. TV shows that promote a social hierarchy also create anxiety. Sexual behaviour occurs when people feel confident and comfortable in a social setting. Nightclubs and bars with more men that women create anxiety, as women feel less confident and men become apprehensive to not create conflict over talking to a girl if other guys also want to talk to the girl. Nightclubs and bars with more women than men are more sexual as women feel safe and men feel more in tune with feminine behaviour. Men also feel more confident as their chances of picking up are better. Also, many women are bisexual so a nightclub or bar with more women than men will result in more threesomes.

Some nightclubs and bars are open to all people, some single, some in a committed relationship, some looking for a one night stand, some looking for a date. Bars that promote a clientele of singles offer a better chance at picking up, such as hosting singles parties.
