Miracles in a Noisy Place

Staying focused on God when all hell is breaking loose

I don’t know much about tennis. I know it’s intense and requires a lot of exertion. But I wouldn’t peg the game as a proper allegory for life. It’s awfully quiet! The only sounds you hear are those of the players and the occasional cheer accompanying a point. It seems scripted. But that’s only a spectator’s point of view. I suppose it’s different for the players. I guess it’s a lot noisier than we can imagine. It’s noisy between the ears and within the heart.

But I look at a sport like football, where they need an increased sense of awareness — awareness of not only what’s going on within the head and heart. It takes extra effort to quiet the noise of self-doubt within and the needless clamor of spectators without.

Needless, but even so essential to the rhythm of life. For the rest of your life, you’ll hear the clamor and chaos that comes from voices — those that support you and those that don’t.

You see, the violent take it by force. God sets the target, but you still have to run the race. And, in that race, there are opposing forces and their spectators. No vision from God is accomplished in silence.

The Israelites left Egypt in the midst of chaos. Noah built a boat in the midst of dissenting voices. Joshua entered Jericho at the sound of blaring trumpets and a crashing wall. Jesus went to the cross at the chants of “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”

The noise is a necessary part of the journey to your wealthy place. It will follow you everywhere — as it did when a certain man named Jairus called on Jesus to heal his daughter.
