Jane Doe Case Unsolved Since 40 Years

The murder has remained unsolved since December 6, 1983.

This murder in Chautauqua County, New York, remains unsolved despite there being a photograph of the woman. It has been around 40 years.

The tragedy is that we still don’t know the woman’s name. That is why we refer to her as Jane Doe. She was murdered along Old Rt 17 in the Town of Ellery in 1983.

On December 6, a truck driver was out and about at the crack of dawn. It was an average day for him: little did he imagine the scary twist it would take. While driving down Old Rt 17, he noticed something strange. He saw a limp figure from afar, and believing it to be someone injured, he immediately stopped the truck. The truth was much more gruesome.

A woman’s body lay dead in a ditch. She was wearing almost no clothes, and blood pooled around her. Hers had not been a gentle death. Alarmed, the driver immediately contacted the police. They rushed to the scene, eager to solve the case. At the time, they didn’t know that this case would go down in history as one of the rare unsolved mysteries of Chautauqua county.

The police had little to go by. The woman had no driver’s license or purse. There was no personal belonging except for a cryptic letter. The letter still hasn’t been decoded. However, the resourceful police were determined to extract whatever clues possible. With the comparatively lacking equipment available in 1983, they put together quite a few clues.

The police gathered that Jane Doe was around 33–37 years old. She had conceived at least one child, and that too around fifteen years prior to the murder. After closely examining her teeth, the police believed she was from Canada or Europe.
