The Secret to Boosting Personal Growth is Reducing This One Thing

Ready to embark on a personal development or spiritual journey? Here’s what you need to know.

Many people think that dressing from head to toe in Alo yoga gear, sitting cross-legged in a meditation class while chanting “ommm” among other fellow yogis will lead them to higher levels of consciousness.

If you examine various religions and practices, the common thread is that reaching enlightenment or “oneness” requires transcending ego, or simply, letting go of the ego.

Ego is filled with righteousness, competitiveness, and a desire to stand out, be noticed and pursue self-serving interests.

Is all ego bad? No.

In fact, we do need ego and in healthy doses, it can drive creativity, innovation, and lead to positive and lasting change.

In unhealthy doses, it can lead to greed, possessiveness, materialism, excess and greater separation from humanity.

While there’s not one definition or path to personal growth, it is worth understanding how our egos help or us or hinder us whether we are seeking to grow professionally, personally or spiritually.

In any of those categories, whether you’re looking for a lifetime partner and a healthy long term relationships, obtain a promotion at work, or pursue a higher calling to contribute to the greater good.

In any instance of true personal growth, we’re typically seeking to better ourselves and hopefully better those around us.

Going back to the earlier example, of boosting your image by including charity work on your LinkedIn profile is vain and self serving. Your the primary beneficiary of that action.

In contrast, doing charity work to actually contribute to the community and affect positive change or simply to pay-it-forward is less ego-driven, as the emphasis is likely two fold: you feel good from giving your time, and you likely boosted someone else’s day as well.

When thinking about your own personal growth – where you are now, versus where you hope to be in 6 months, a year, or 5 years, ask yourself this simple question:

If you answer the question honestly, you’ll decipher fairly quickly if you’re actually hoping to evolve and access higher levels of consciousness, or if you’re simply feeding your ego and merely pretending to become a more enlightened to be on-trend and IG worthy.

If nothing else, remember that if all else fails, rise higher.
