How to Beat Cravings

It all comes down to habits

Humans are creatures of habit, and not all of them are ideal. These habits have accumulated over time and can seriously impede our attempts to be our best selves. We all wish for something better in our lives. Whether it be the desire to lose weight, manage our time better, or stop drinking, we are rarely 100% happy with where we currently stand.

The good news is those bad habits can be overcome. We just have to pay attention to our triggers and replace our habits with healthier choices.
Read on to find out more.

One of the best parts of being human is indulging in our guilty pleasures. As children, we were treated to candy or fast food as a reward for good behavior. A scrumptious dessert was placed in front of us every year and we were asked to make a wish, blow out candles, and stuff our faces with birthday cake and ice cream.

In grade school, Tuesdays are Dominos Day and vending machines are aplenty. College cafeterias stay open late for fourth meal. Fridays at the office are often a celebration of birthdays or holidays and followed by happy hour.

Every other commercial on television features our favorite foods, photoshopped to perfection. We all know that the Big Mac never looks that enticing in reality, but we start to crave McDonalds anyway. It is nearly impossible to go anywhere without being tempted by junk food.

It’s just not food we love to indulge in. Once we reached adolescence, many of us started to smoke cigarettes, drink alcohol, or do drugs. Our D.A.R.E. days went up in flames the moment we shared a joint with our friends or guzzled down a Smirnoff Ice at a party.

We were taught that it was bad to party, but it felt so good. The dulling of our senses and out of body experiences gave us a new perspective on life. We were young, having fun, and consuming substances to make us feel better.

Now we are older and many of these vices have stuck with us. Cravings for food, alcohol, or cigarettes arise often. We desire to lead a healthier lifestyle and lose a few pounds, but find ourselves stuck in a vicious cycle of giving into cravings and then regretting our decisions.
